In a firm address to the media yesterday, Senegalese political figure Ousmane Sonko did not mince his words regarding the recent remarks made by the country’s new Prime Minister, Al Aminou Lo. The former head of government issued veiled warnings, signaling growing unease over the political climate and the new leadership’s approach.
The opposition leader began by urging the technocrat-turned-prime minister to remain within his designated domain. « He should stick to the numbers. If he claims to be a technocrat, he must limit himself to technical governance, » Sonko declared, underscoring the need for restraint and focus on administrative duties.
political tensions spark sharp rebukes
Sonko went on to accuse the Prime Minister of playing a role in the escalating tensions between his party, Pastef, and the Head of State. « We are fully aware of his involvement in the disputes dividing Pastef and the president. Until now, we have chosen not to disclose all the details. He should tread carefully, » he cautioned, hinting at undisclosed information that could further complicate the situation.
The former Prime Minister also criticized Al Aminou Lo’s public remarks during the announcement of the new government. « I heard him yesterday, lecturing us during the unveiling of the cabinet. Perhaps he should first apply those lessons to himself, » Sonko remarked, dismissing the Prime Minister’s statements as hypocritical.
In a parting shot, Sonko left no doubt about his access to critical insights. « We know everything. While we have chosen to withhold certain facts for now, we will not tolerate provocations, » he asserted, signaling that the political standoff is far from over.
