Constitutional Council: Ousmane Sonko shifts his discourse dramatically after initial calm

Ousmane Sonko has recently demonstrated a striking shift in his public statements regarding the Constitutional Council. Initially advocating for adherence to its rulings, he has now transitioned to sharp criticism. Speaking at the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Touba, the political leader condemned what he perceives as presidential influence over legislation passed by deputies, describing the situation as “serious.”
Ousmane Sonko has decidedly altered his stance on the Constitutional Council, a remarkable evolution observed within merely a few days. Following the Council of Sages’ decision to invalidate a bill passed by the National Assembly – a text designed to enhance parliamentary powers at the expense of the President of the Republic – the Pastef leader had previously urged respect for the ruling.
“This decision is binding on everyone! (…) In a democracy, when institutions fulfill their roles, each within its designated sphere of action, no crisis can emerge,” Sonko had asserted at the time. However, during the inauguration of Pastef’s new headquarters in Touba, the politician delivered a noticeably different message. Addressing his supporters, he vehemently challenged the decision handed down by the seven members of the Constitutional Council.
“The Constitutional Council cannot dictate that deputies must pass laws solely to please the President of the Republic. What is unfolding in this country is truly grave,” he declared. Ousmane Sonko also questioned the Head of State’s frequent appeals to the Constitutional Council. “Every week, he goes to the Constitutional Council,” Sonko remarked, referring to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
