Sahel governments intensify crackdown on human rights activists

Human rights defenders across the Sahel region are facing unprecedented levels of repression as civic spaces shrink and fundamental freedoms come under severe threat. A new regional report released today exposes coordinated suppression tactics being employed by authorities in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad.

Documented cases reveal systematic violations

The Observatoire pour la protection des défenseurs des droits humains (a joint initiative of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)) has documented 61 concrete cases of human rights violations against activists in these four countries over the past five years. The report, titled “Civic space and human rights defenders in the Sahel: regional convergence of repression practices”, reveals a troubling pattern of coordinated tactics.

Common suppression strategies uncovered

Governments in the region are deploying increasingly sophisticated methods to silence dissent:

  • Arbitrary arrests and detentions without due process
  • Judicial harassment through baseless prosecutions
  • Enforced disappearances and kidnappings
  • Online harassment and digital surveillance
  • Media censorship and restrictions
  • Association dissolutions and NGO bans

Drissa Traore, Secretary-General of FIDH, warns: “The detailed documentation of 61 attacks against human rights defenders and civic space in the Sahel over five years paints a damning picture. Authorities in these countries appear locked in an endless cycle of repression that must stop immediately. The restoration of the rule of law and democracy – to which Sahel populations remain deeply committed – depends on this. We stand in solidarity with defenders facing these unjust attacks.”

International obligations ignored

Despite their commitments to regional and international human rights frameworks, governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad are systematically violating fundamental freedoms:

  • Violent crackdowns on peaceful protests
  • Dissolution of independent associations
  • Media control and suspension
  • Restrictions on freedom of assembly

Gerald Staberock, Secretary-General of OMCT, states: “The time has come for authorities in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad to comply with their international obligations and cease their repression of civil society. We urge the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the United Nations and international partners to take all necessary measures to put an end to these violations of fundamental rights and freedoms.”

Call for immediate action

The report concludes with urgent recommendations for:

  • Immediate cessation of all forms of repression against human rights defenders
  • Investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of violations
  • Restoration of civic space and fundamental freedoms
  • Compliance with international human rights obligations
