Dakar — The National Assembly’s legislative agenda has reached a critical juncture, with key economic and constitutional files now under intense scrutiny. Following the Conference of Presidents meeting on Friday, lawmakers will fast-track the examination of the Labor Code and Social Security Code revisions beginning Saturday, before bringing both texts to a full plenary session on Monday.

The constitutional reform proposal, however, has emerged as the most pressing issue on the legislative floor. Ousmane Sonko, Speaker of the National Assembly, disclosed during a Bureau meeting that the presidency had yet to respond to the mandatory opinion request submitted weeks ago regarding the constitutional amendment bill.

In response to the executive branch’s silence, Sonko has set a firm deadline: Monday, June 22. Should the presidency fail to provide feedback by this date, the Assembly’s Bureau will immediately convene to advance the legislative process, with or without presidential input. The Speaker emphasized his determination to push through the constitutional reform before the current ordinary session concludes.

Sonko also highlighted another unresolved matter: the delayed submission of two critical financial documents—already approved by the Council of Ministers—the Supplementary Finance Bill and the Budget Orientation Debate paper. The legislative-executive standoff now enters a decisive phase, with the clock ticking on both fronts.
