Opposition coalition urges united front following constitutional council’s decision on Ousmane Sonko
The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has responded sharply to the Constitutional Council’s ruling on Ousmane Sonko’s reinstatement as a member of parliament. In a statement issued Thursday, the opposition coalition argued that the decision does not resolve the ongoing political debate surrounding the former Prime Minister’s return to his legislative seat.
The FDR acknowledged the Council’s ruling that it lacked jurisdiction to address claims of forfeiture raised by the plaintiffs. However, the coalition emphasized that this outcome does not diminish the legitimacy of the criticisms leveled against Sonko’s reinstatement as leader of the Pastef party.
The opposition alliance condemned what it described as the ruling party’s incompetence and arrogance, while also scrutinizing recent statements made by Pastef’s president in interviews with international media. The FDR contended that these remarks reflect a distorted interpretation of national identity.
The coalition warned of a troubling period in Senegal’s political landscape, citing what it perceives as dangerous deviations by the current administration. It reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing democratic principles and legal compliance through institutional channels.
Beyond the Sonko case, the FDR issued a rallying cry for opposition forces to unite. The coalition extended its invitation to political parties, civil society organizations, trade unions, youth movements, and democratic advocates to form a broad coalition aimed at presenting an alternative to the ruling government.
This declaration followed the Constitutional Council’s dismissal of legal challenges against the procedure that enabled Sonko’s return to parliament, effectively ending the opposition’s legal battle on this issue.
