Ousmane Sonko outlines Pastef’s financial independence and political vision in Diourbel

During a two-day outreach in the Diourbel region as part of the Pastef party’s « 48 hours » campaign, Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed his commitment to financial autonomy for the movement. Addressing crowds in Touba and Sadio, he emphasized the party’s grassroots financing model and shared his perspective on the current state leadership.

Grassroots financing: a pillar of Pastef’s strength

At a gathering in Touba, Ousmane Sonko clarified how Pastef sustains itself without public funds. He dismissed concerns about his party’s growing influence, highlighting that its success stems from organic support rather than state resources.

« Pastef does not rely on public money to fund its activities. That would go against our principles, » he stated, underscoring transparency and self-reliance. Addressing skepticism from opponents about the party’s rapid membership growth, he remarked with a touch of humor, « By 4 p.m. today, all 13,000 membership cards had been sold. We had to place an emergency order in Dakar to meet demand. »

He urged supporters to stay focused on the party’s mission, warning against distractions or provocations. « Avoid conflicts. Do not engage in disputes. If peace prevails in Senegal, Pastef will dominate the political landscape. No election is beyond its reach. »

Questioning the government’s direction

In Sadio, Ousmane Sonko took a more analytical tone, reflecting on the political transition of March 2024. He revisited his pivotal role in selecting Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the party’s substitute candidate after his own eligibility was challenged—an act he framed as a historic and strategic decision to secure victory.

The remarks hinted at growing concerns within the population about a potential drift from the party’s original commitments. Ousmane Sonko subtly contrasted the party’s founding vision with the current administration’s trajectory, suggesting a gap between promise and execution.

2026 and 2029 elections: the road ahead

Looking forward, Ousmane Sonko framed the upcoming elections of 2026 and 2029 as critical milestones in completing Senegal’s political transformation. While crediting his leadership for 80% of the movement’s progress, he positioned himself as the guardian of its core principles, ensuring the vision endures beyond his personal involvement.

The message resonated with party members, reinforcing his central role in shaping Senegal’s political future.
