SENEGAL-POLITICS-INSTITUTIONS
Dakar, June 29 (APS) – National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko described the constitutional reform passed Monday by the majority parliamentary group as “one of the most consolidating, because it allows us to perfect Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management.”
“This [constitutional] reform is one of the most consolidating, enabling us to take giant steps in perfecting Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management,” he stated.
Sonko was presiding over the plenary session that examined Bill No. 17/2026 on constitutional revision, an initiative of deputies from the Pastef-Les Patriotes parliamentary group.
The head of the parliamentary institution announced that the adopted text would be sent to the head of state “for further action.”
“I will not invoke Article 103. I will ask the president of the republic to promulgate this law, simply and purely, because the Constitutional Council, whose decisions are binding on all public, administrative, and political authorities, simultaneously ensures adoption and approval,” he indicated.
According to him, the vote on the bill marks the end of the adoption process for this important text.
Ousmane Sonko provided a historical overview of the revision process, which began several years ago.
“The amendments just incorporated into the Constitution have traversed the entire political path of our commitments,” he added.
“Dialogue is important, but it is not institutional. This dialogue did exist,” Sonko said.
The president of the republic had called for a political dialogue in which Pastef-Les Patriotes participated alongside many other political parties and organizations of all stripes, Sonko recalled.
He did not fail to congratulate the deputies who sponsored this constitutional revision proposal, “conforming to what emerged from the dialogue.”
Regarding the asset declaration, the former prime minister assured that he would soon carry out this exercise after leaving the head of government.
“I declared my assets as prime minister. I have three months to make another declaration upon leaving. And I will declare next week,” announced Ousmane Sonko.
