Democratic Republic of Congo: Médecins Sans Frontières calls on Global Fund to prioritize North Kivu in malaria fight

RDC: MSF appelle le Fonds mondial à maintenir le Nord-Kivu dans ses priorités concernant le paludisme

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has expressed deep concern over potential future funding reductions, warning that the health situation in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, could deteriorate significantly. This region has already endured years of humanitarian crisis and profound supply chain challenges, severely impacting its healthcare system.

Stéphane Doyon, a program manager with MSF France, elaborated on the organization’s apprehension. He highlighted that if North Kivu were to be removed from the Global Fund’s priority projects, the vast majority of essential treatments currently supplied by the Global Fund to health centers—those not directly supported by MSF—would cease to arrive.

MSF emphasizes that it cannot realistically substitute for the Global Fund’s comprehensive support across an entire province. Such a scenario, Doyon indicated, would render the health situation exceptionally critical for the population.

Malaria stands as the foremost cause of consultations observed in MSF’s health facilities throughout the region. For MSF, the immediate priority is to ensure the continued integration of malaria support for North Kivu, a province profoundly affected and currently considered one of the most critical zones from a health perspective. The region is also grappling with outbreaks of measles and cholera, adding to the burden. The local population, deeply scarred by ongoing conflict, is in urgent need of sustained external assistance, as underscored by Doyon.
