AMTEC: a strategic defense innovation platform in southern Morocco
Morocco and the United States are jointly developing the African Multi-Domain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan, a strategic city in southern Morocco. The facility will be built around three core components: a multidomain training area (MDTA), a Drone Academy (MTDA), and an innovation and experimentation center. The project aims to enhance military capabilities by integrating modern technologies and fostering interoperability between African and Western defense partners.
Advanced training for complex operational environments
The MDTA will serve as a high-tech training ground where military forces can prepare for operations across diverse and challenging scenarios, including full-spectrum electromagnetic warfare. This environment will allow African and allied forces to simulate real-world conditions, ensuring readiness for modern conflicts.
Drone Academy: shaping Africa’s counterterrorism capabilities
The Drone Academy will focus on training African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations in West Africa. By equipping local forces with advanced drone technologies, the initiative seeks to bolster regional security and response capabilities.
Innovation hub for defense technologies
The innovation center will function as a rapid-testing laboratory for emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. A key priority will be developing cost-effective and scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s unique operational challenges.
Economic and technological spillover effects
Beyond its military applications, AMTEC is expected to create significant economic and technological opportunities. The project will engage local and international industrial and academic players, fostering a dynamic innovation ecosystem centered on defense technologies. Potential applications include wireless communication advancements and next-generation detection systems, with a focus on supporting development in remote regions.
A proof of concept at African Lion 2027
Morocco’s annual African Lion exercise, one of the largest multinational military drills in Africa, will serve as the first real-world test for AMTEC’s concepts. Scheduled for 2027, the exercise will provide a platform to validate the integration of cutting-edge technologies in operational settings, reinforcing Morocco’s role as a key security partner in the region.
Strategic vision of Moroccan and US leadership
Moroccan General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces, highlighted the country’s readiness to implement this ambitious project. “Morocco’s strong infrastructure and skilled workforce position it perfectly to turn this vision into operational reality, while also serving as a reliable industrial partner for the United States,” he stated.
US officials echoed this sentiment, emphasizing AMTEC’s potential to drive innovation in both American and African defense industries. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to address emerging security challenges through collaborative, technology-driven solutions.
