Morocco renews pledge to UN peacekeeping mission commitment

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita welcomed UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat on Monday for his second official visit to the kingdom. Talks focused on Morocco’s longstanding and exemplary contributions to United Nations peacekeeping efforts.

Discussions between the two sides centered on the critical role and substantial, exemplary contributions of the Kingdom of Morocco to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Morocco’s involvement stems from a strategic royal vision rooted in a continuous, long-standing commitment to UN peacekeeping that dates back to 1960.

Currently ranked ninth among the top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions, Morocco holds the presidency of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peace matters—a clear reflection of the international community’s trust in Morocco regarding global peace and security issues.

Mr. Lacroix’s visit comes at a time when the UN Secretary-General has launched major reform initiatives, including the “UN 80” project aimed at streamlining the UN Secretariat, as well as a comprehensive strategic review of all peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture—all with the goal of restoring the primacy of political solutions in conflict management.
