Mali joins global dialogue on reshaping higher education for the future

On June 6, 2026, Mali’s higher education sector made a significant contribution to an international forum held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. The event brought together policymakers, academics, tech industry leaders, and international organizations to explore innovative pathways for higher education development.

The Malian delegation was led by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako (USSGB) and coordinator of the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (ICHEI) partnership with Malian universities. His presence underscored Mali’s commitment to advancing digital transformation and artificial intelligence in higher education across the country.

Collaborative solutions for a changing educational landscape

The summit focused on bridging the gap between higher education institutions and the technology sector, with a special emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications across key industries such as agriculture, commerce, education, and natural sciences. Discussions centered on building a dynamic ecosystem that fosters skill development, lifelong learning, and industry-academia collaboration.

Key outcomes included the identification of actionable strategies such as:

  • Innovative AI-driven training programs designed to equip students and professionals with cutting-edge competencies.
  • Showcasing successful tech-driven educational initiatives to inspire wider adoption and adaptation.
  • Strengthening the Online International Education Institute (IIOE) through the publication of a global report and the expansion of its partner network.

The event also highlighted the need for curriculum innovation, practical skill development, and continuous learning opportunities—all aligned with the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.

Mali’s leadership in digital education transformation

Mali’s participation was not merely symbolic. Three of the country’s leading higher education institutions have already taken concrete steps by signing partnership agreements with UNESCO-ICHEI:

  • University of Kurukanfuga, Bamako
  • University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako
  • University Pedagogy Institute

These partnerships aim to integrate digital tools and AI into teaching and learning, positioning Mali as a regional leader in educational innovation. Dr. Koumaré’s role as coordinator of the IIOE network ensures a unified approach to implementing these initiatives nationwide.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mali’s higher education sector. Through targeted capacity-building efforts, the organization is helping to strengthen human, technical, and technological capabilities in Malian universities, aligning with the nation’s broader development goals.

Setting the stage for sustainable educational growth

The summit concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). By leveraging technology and international cooperation, Mali and its global partners are paving the way for a future where education is accessible, adaptive, and aligned with the needs of society and industry.
