Benin and Niger advance talks on border reopening and cooperation

Béninese and Nigerien expert committees met in Cotonou to discuss the reopening of their shared border. The meeting follows President Romuald Wadagni’s official visit to Niamey on June 2, as part of ongoing efforts to restore bilateral relations.
The session, held on June 20 under the joint leadership of Niger’s Minister of State for Security, General Mohamed Toumba, and Benin’s Minister for African Integration, Adjadi Bakari, took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cotonou. The closed-door talks focused on security, defense, diplomatic protocols, legal frameworks, and economic cooperation.
While both sides expressed optimism about border reopening prospects, final agreements on defense protocols, security measures, and customs procedures must still be formalized. The discussions continued into June 21.
