Concerns have emerged from the French Professional Football League (LFP) regarding potential sports corruption linked to OGC Nice forward Elye Wahi. Following the 34th Ligue 1 matchday clash between OGC Nice and FC Metz on May 17, authorities were alerted to unusual betting patterns involving the player.

The encounter itself, a rather unremarkable 0-0 draw, had significant consequences for OGC Nice, forcing them into a crucial playoff against AS Saint-Étienne to secure their top-flight status.

However, this seemingly uneventful match is now at the center of an integrity inquiry. The LFP has reported detecting suspicious international wagering activity, specifically concerning a yellow card issued to Wahi during the game on May 17. Notably, this particular booking resulted in Wahi’s suspension for the first leg of the vital playoff fixture against AS Saint-Étienne, due to an accumulation of cautions.

In response to these findings, the LFP promptly forwarded all pertinent information to the relevant national bodies: the Central Service for Races and Games of the National Police, the National Gaming Authority, and the French Football Federation. To facilitate a thorough investigation and uncover the full truth, a formal complaint against an unknown party (plainte contre X) was lodged on May 29, 2026. The complaint cites potential charges of sports corruption and organized fraud.

At this juncture, the LFP has stated it will refrain from making any further comments and has not yet initiated any internal disciplinary proceedings. Nevertheless, the league reserves the right to take such action as the ongoing investigations progress.

Adding a new dimension to the unfolding situation, the Marseille public prosecutor’s office confirmed that a 23-year-old Ligue 1 footballer was apprehended on May 29. The arrest, part of an ongoing inquiry into suspected organized fraud, sports corruption, receipt of criminal property, and money laundering, saw the player released after initial questioning. Investigations are actively continuing.

Elye Wahi is thus under suspicion of deliberately incurring the yellow card. While reviewing footage, the foul committed against Metz player Sadibou Sané, though clear, did not overtly appear to be intentionally engineered for the purpose of receiving a booking. While this controversy is expected to generate numerous discussions in the coming days, it seems improbable at present that AS Saint-Étienne’s sporting outcome for the season will be directly impacted by these developments. This situation bears a resemblance to a case in England, where West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta received a yellow card under similar circumstances during a Premier League match against Aston Villa, also accompanied by abnormal betting volumes. Following that inquiry, Paqueta received a reprimand from his national federation.

The LFP underscores its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the integrity of its competitions. The league affirms it will act with the utmost resolve against any conduct that threatens to compromise this fundamental principle.
