High-level Morocco-France talks in Rabat seek to elevate bilateral ties

A landmark meeting between Moroccan and French delegations in Rabat signals a renewed phase in the diplomatic thaw between the two nations—so emphasized by both prime ministers during opening remarks this Thursday morning.

These consultations, first established in 1996 under King Hassan II, remained dormant for years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Paris. Yet today, those strains seem like a distant memory.

« A fresh chapter in our bilateral relations »

Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch described the enhanced partnership agreement, finalized during the French president’s 2024 state visit, as having « opened a fresh chapter in our bilateral relations » and set « an ambitious course forward ».

The French prime minister underscored the deepening Morocco-France alliance, labeling it a « pivotal moment » as both capitals pursue their goal of « elevating bilateral ties to a new level ».

Over a dozen cooperation frameworks signed

Following bilateral ministerial talks ahead of the plenary session, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Moroccan counterpart Aziz Akhannouch held a private meeting to discuss security cooperation and counterterrorism measures.

Lecornu also highlighted expectations of a royal visit to France, which would culminate in the signing of a new bilateral treaty to redefine the Paris-Rabat relationship.

The plenary session concluded with the signing of over a dozen cooperation instruments—conventions, declarations of intent, and partnership agreements.
