French diplomatic officials are maintaining close contact with the family of a French citizen arrested in Senegal on February 14 for “acts against nature,” following the implementation of stricter anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the country.

A French national was taken into custody on February 14, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal, on charges including “acts against nature,” criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and attempted HIV transmission during a broader wave of arrests. Diplomatic sources confirmed the detention today.

“The French embassy in Dakar is closely monitoring the situation of our fellow citizen,” a diplomatic spokesperson stated. The French consulate has already conducted four consular visits to ensure the individual’s well-being and legal protection.

French foreign ministry officials and consular authorities are also in regular contact with the detainee’s family, providing updates and support throughout the process.

Senegal tightens anti-LGBTQ+ laws with severe penalties

On March 31, 2026, Senegal enacted sweeping legislation that drastically increases penalties for “acts against nature,” effectively criminalizing same-sex relationships. Under the new law, individuals convicted of such acts face imprisonment ranging from five to ten years and fines between 3,000 and 15,000 euros.

The bill was spearheaded by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who emphasized the need for legal clarity. “Any sexual act between individuals of the same sex constitutes an act against nature. We are now defining these acts because no legal definition previously existed,” Sonko stated on February 25, 2026. Local press reports indicate dozens of new arrests under this law each day.

A measure that is “deeply concerning” and “violates” fundamental human rights, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

In response, French officials reiterated their commitment to universal human rights and the decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide. “France remains firmly dedicated to defending the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and combating discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” the diplomatic source stated. The French government has also pledged full support for those affected by the discriminatory legislation in Senegal.
