French football league sanctions Nantes for pitch invasion
Following the pitch invasion that halted the final Ligue 1 match between Nantes and Toulouse on May 17, the French Football League has imposed a closed-door fixture on the Canaries for next season.
The long-awaited decision has been delivered for FC Nantes. Following the pitch invasion by ultras on May 17 during the final Ligue 1 clash against Toulouse—sparked by the club’s relegation to Ligue 2—the LFP’s disciplinary committee ruled on Wednesday to impose a full closed-door match sanction on the Canaries.
No point deduction
The governing body also confirmed the final score of 0-0 at the time of the match’s interruption. Despite the severity of the incident, Nantes will avoid additional penalties such as point deductions for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.
In addition to the complete stadium closure, the Loire stand—from which the disturbances originated—will remain shut for two additional fixtures.
The sanctions could have been harsher, as Nantes faced the possibility of point deductions in Ligue 2. However, this severe measure was ultimately avoided.
