Security struggles marred the final day of Ligue 1 action as pitch invasions forced two matches to an early close. The disruptions unfolded in Nantes and Nice following tense clashes on and off the field.
The season’s concluding fixtures were overshadowed by crowd trouble, with two of the ten scheduled games abandoned after supporters breached stadium perimeters. The incidents unfolded as clubs across France battled for survival, pride and European spots in the final showdown.
In Nice, ultras stormed the pitch in the closing moments of the home side’s clash with Metz, clashing with riot police deployed to restore order. The situation escalated sharply in Nantes, where the match against Toulouse never reached its natural conclusion.
At the Stade de la Beaujoire, the game was halted in the 22nd minute after dozens of supporters—many wearing masks—rushed onto the field, forcing players to retreat to the dressing rooms. The abandonment came as a bitter blow to Vahid Halilhodžić, who was making his final appearance as Nantes manager.
“This is disgraceful”
Forty minutes later, officials confirmed the match would not resume. Halilhodžić, visibly shaken, addressed the media with raw emotion. “This is disgraceful. I wanted to go to the stands and tell them to stop. I understand their frustration, but this is unacceptable. I’ve given everything as a coach and as a man. The reality is heartbreaking,” he confessed.
The French football authorities have not yet issued a public statement but confirmed an internal investigation is underway. Nantes face severe consequences, including potential stadium closures and point deductions in the upcoming Ligue 2 campaign. Such penalties were previously imposed on Saint-Étienne four years ago after similar incidents.
