After concluding his diplomatic mission in Togo, the outgoing European Union ambassador, Gwilym Ceri Jones, held a farewell meeting with Togolese Prime Minister Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. The high-level discussion highlighted the remarkable expansion of the EU-Togo partnership, which has deepened significantly during his tenure.
The ambassador, speaking after the meeting, emphasized the broadening scope of collaboration between Brussels and Lomé. He outlined how the partnership now spans critical sectors such as sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security. His visit was aimed at evaluating the progress of ongoing cooperation while fostering stronger ties with the Togolese government.
Investment programs driving economic growth
The EU envoy underscored the surge in European investment initiatives in Togo, describing them as a catalyst for private sector engagement on both sides. He highlighted strategic sectors—including energy, agriculture, and digital innovation—where these investments are expected to boost employment and economic expansion.
Strengthening security and development ties
Gwilym Ceri Jones also addressed the deepening collaboration in peace and security, which he described as essential to sustainable development. The EU has significantly bolstered its support for Togolese armed forces, aiding efforts against terrorism and enhancing maritime security along the country’s coastlines.
The ambassador praised the strength of the EU-Togo relationship, expressing optimism for its continued growth beyond his departure.
Long-term cooperation framework
European interventions in Togo are structured under the 2021–2027 Joint Multi-Annual Programming Document (DCP), backed by a €201 million funding envelope. The framework prioritizes three key areas: human development and socioeconomic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a resilient, inclusive society through accountable governance.
A new tripartite mechanism for economic progress
The partnership’s momentum received a boost in June with the launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism. This structure unites the Togolese government, the European team, and Eurocham Togo in a permanent dialogue platform. Its goals include improving the business climate, attracting European investments, and supporting economic reforms to create jobs and drive private sector growth.
The initiative is designed to translate cooperation into tangible outcomes, including structural economic transformation. Both sides view these efforts as a testament to the partnership’s durability, set to flourish even after Ambassador Jones’ departure.
