Chad: man on trial for selling same plot to multiple buyers

On monday, June 8, 2026, a hearing lasting over four hours took place at the high court in N’Djamena. A man is being prosecuted for selling a single plot of land to multiple individuals for millions of CFA francs. He also faces charges of issuing death threats.

According to case documents, the defendant allegedly received sums ranging from 52 million to 99.5 million CFA francs from several buyers.

During the session, heated exchanges occurred between the defense team and the civil party lawyers. The latter demand full reimbursement of the amounts paid by their clients, plus damages.

The defense argued that their client was held in pre-trial detention for over three months by intelligence services before being brought before a judge, which they say is illegal. They insist the land rightfully belongs to their client, acting on behalf of his brothers, and is not under dispute. They added that the defendant’s paternal uncle allegedly manipulated some family members to claim the property of his deceased brother, which led buyers to demand their money back.

The civil party’s lawyers called the actions fraudulent, but the defense rejected that, stating no property was obtained fraudulently and that articles 213 and 214 of the Chadian penal code do not apply here. The prosecutor called for a conviction, arguing that collecting large sums from multiple people is an offense, and requested a fine of 500,000 CFA francs.

Both sides are pressing the judges for a favorable ruling. Notably, a similar hearing took place on June 1 for the same case. The court has adjourned for deliberation, and in the meantime, the defendant remains in custody at Klessoum prison.
