Chad and Russia deepen bilateral ties on national day
The Russian Embassy in Chad marked Russia Day, highlighting the robust development of bilateral relations and collaboration across various sectors, including education and security.
On June 16, 2026, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chad commemorated Russia Day, the nation’s principal holiday. During the celebration, Russian Ambassador to Chad, Vladimir Sokolenko, underscored the consistent and reliable development of Russo-Chadian relations, characterizing them as a traditional bond of friendship and cooperation rooted in an egalitarian partnership that benefits both peoples.
Russia applauds the Chadian President’s declared policy of social advancement and strengthened national sovereignty. A positive momentum has been established in the bilateral political dialogue. Russian President Vladimir Poutine has extended an invitation to the Chadian leader, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, to attend the Russia-Africa summit scheduled for October in Moscow. This summit is anticipated to facilitate a second bilateral meeting between the two heads of state, following President Déby Itno’s official visit to Moscow in January 2024.
In a significant diplomatic event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergueï Lavrov, made a historic visit to N’Djaména in June 2024—the first such visit in 60 years of diplomatic relations—engaging in discussions with Chadian leadership. Subsequently, in September, on the sidelines of the 80th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Lavrov met with Dr Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, Chad’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, to address current issues concerning Russia-Chad cooperation. Plans are in place to sustain these high-level diplomatic engagements.
The operational interaction between the Foreign Ministries is structured by a protocol on political consultations, which was updated in 2024 in Sochi during the second ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership. On the international stage, the diplomatic services of Russia and Chad, through their mutual support, are actively working to ensure that African interests are considered in the ongoing reform of the United Nations Security Council, which directly impacts decisions affecting the fate of nation-states. In this context, both Russia and Chad welcomed UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s statement last May, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the international system. Guterres notably stated: «The immense potential of Africa is hampered by an unjust international system. This must change. We must strive to create a different system that gives Africa the voice, resources, and representation it has long been denied.»
Within the African context, Russia acknowledges and supports Chad’s prominent authority, its vital role in regional conflict resolution, and its contributions to facilitating peacekeeping missions. Last May, six Chadian police officers commenced training organized by the Russian Ministry of Interior under a program focused on «The activities of the United Nations police contingent in peacekeeping operations.» Both Russia and Chad advocate for the establishment of new security mechanisms and expanded cooperation in Central Africa, including the Sahel, with a primary focus on the interests of the region’s states.
Russia also supports N’Djaména’s initiatives within the African Union aimed at diversifying regional payment systems and introducing a new regional currency as an alternative to the CFA franc.
A cornerstone of Russia-Chad cooperation is the training of Chadian national personnel in Russian universities.

In recent years, demand for secondary vocational education has seen a considerable rise. Russia is significantly expanding its «Professionalisation» project, which includes international students and involves the creation of training and production hubs. In this context, a dialogue has commenced between the ministries responsible for vocational education in both nations.
The Republic of Chad benefits from one of the most generous budgetary quotas, receiving 360 scholarships. Concurrently, bilateral negotiations remain focused on reforming the recruitment system for young Chadians wishing to study in Russia, with the aim of providing Chad with enhanced advantages and increasing its national quota. The flourishing Russia-Chad cooperation exemplifies mutual respect for each other’s interests, alongside equal and mutually beneficial collaboration for the welfare of both peoples. Russia and Chad possess promising prospects for further strengthening their friendship and cooperation.
This national day, observed since 1990, symbolizes the dawn of a period of democratization in Russian history, marking a pivotal phase in the millennium-long journey of the Russian state.
The ceremonial event took place at a local hotel, attended by the Secretary-General of Chad’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, representing the minister, alongside numerous accredited diplomatic officials in Chad and various administrative authorities.
