Chad’s strategic involvement in the World Urban Forum held in Baku, Azerbaijan, has resulted in a major breakthrough for the nation’s environmental policy. The country is now officially recognized as the 11th member state eligible for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program, an initiative under the United Nations Green Climate Fund.

Addressing urban climate challenges

This international validation rewards the proactive steps taken by Chad to manage the intensifying pressures on its cities. Key priorities include mitigating the effects of devastating floods, managing the internal displacement of citizens, and adapting to the rapid climate shifts that threaten urban stability.

Strategic partnerships and initial funding

During the summit, a high-level delegation led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata held productive talks with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. These discussions focused on strengthening urban resilience and exploring new avenues for international cooperation. As a direct result of this engagement, a preliminary project has been approved for funding, with an estimated budget ranging from $900,000 to $1 million. This initial grant is expected to pave the way for more significant financial commitments from UN-Habitat in the coming months to support Chad’s urban infrastructure.
