Canary Islands Parliament commends Moroccan consul’s contributions
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met this Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Morocco’s Consul General to the Canary Islands, marking the conclusion of her four-year tenure at the helm of the consular representation.
During the meeting, Pérez expressed her gratitude for El Kamouri’s dedication in strengthening institutional relations between the Canary Islands and Morocco. She also extended best wishes for El Kamouri’s future professional endeavors.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving for six years as Morocco’s Consul in Bilbao. During her time in the Basque Country, she played a pivotal role in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the islands.
The positive impact of El Kamouri’s work on deepening ties between the Canary Islands Government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco has been widely recognized across the archipelago.
Clavijo’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara reflects a strategic alignment with Spain’s foreign policy, driven by a shared commitment to regional security, stability, and economic collaboration.
This institutional rapprochement underscores the Canary Islands’ emergence as a key partner in Morocco’s development plans, moving beyond past divisions to embrace a shared future.
Key sectors benefiting from this collaboration include water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research, areas where the Canary Islands’ expertise aligns perfectly with Morocco’s southern provinces’ needs.
Business leaders from both regions are actively pursuing joint ventures, demonstrating how mutual interest forms the bedrock of lasting peace and shared prosperity. El Kamouri’s efforts over the past years have been instrumental in making this dynamic possible.
