Algeria and Mali mend diplomatic ties amid Sahel tensions

Algeria and Mali mend diplomatic ties amid Sahel tensions

In February 2026, Bamako dismissed as “fabricated” rumors suggesting the return of its ambassador to Algiers. Five months later, that return became official. The shift, formalized on July 10, reflects the worsening security landscape in northern Mali, where the transitional government’s position has grown precarious. Meanwhile, Algiers maintained an open dialogue with Bamako while strengthening ties with Niamey and Ouagadougou.

On February 19, Mali’s Foreign Ministry issued a blunt denial. Social media had circulated claims that Bamako’s ambassador would return to Algiers, allegedly following mediation efforts by Niger. The Malian government swiftly rejected the reports as “completely false and unfounded,” accusing “ill-intentioned actors” of attempting to destabilize relations. The message was clear: Mali refused to align with Niger’s recent reconciliation with Algeria.

By July 10, the stance had shifted dramatically. Through communiqué no. 2026-003, the transitional government announced the restoration of its ambassador to Algiers and the reopening of Malian airspace to Algerian civilian and military flights. The move mirrored Algeria’s earlier decision to reopen its own airspace to Mali. Within hours, Algiers reciprocated by confirming the return of its ambassador to Bamako. In a matter of days, both capitals closed the chapter on over a year of frozen diplomatic relations.

Northern Mali’s shifting dynamics

The reversal in Bamako’s approach can be traced to events unfolding in Kidal and Anéfis. Since the coordinated offensive of April 25, 2026, northern Mali has entered uncharted territory. The predominantly Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Al-Qaida-affiliated Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM) set aside their rivalry to target a common adversary: Bamako’s junta and its Russian allies, the Africa Corps. The offensive claimed the life of Mali’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, and thrust Kidal back into the heart of the crisis.
