Major international gathering to boost Cameroon’s global profile

The countdown has begun for Cameroon as it prepares to host the 51st General Assembly of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF), scheduled to take place in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026. This high-profile diplomatic event marks Cameroon’s third major international conference this year, following the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference and the historic papal visit.

Diplomatic groundwork and logistical readiness

Cameroon’s Ambassador to France, André-Magnus Ekoumou, recently met with Théodore Datouo, President of the National Assembly, to review preparations for the upcoming APF session. The discussions centered on Cameroon’s readiness to host this prestigious gathering, with both officials expressing confidence in the nation’s ability to meet the challenge under President Paul Biya’s guidance.

To streamline entry for international delegates, Cameroon’s embassy in France has implemented streamlined visa processing procedures, including the issuance of courtesy visas for all attending delegations.

Parliamentary strengthening and digital innovation

During the meeting, Datouo emphasized the importance of reinforcing parliamentary democracy in Cameroon. He commended Ekoumou for his efforts in supporting Cameroonian communities abroad, particularly in facilitating their participation in Promote 2026, the major business forum scheduled at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé.

Another key topic was the proposed establishment of a parliamentary museum within the National Assembly. Datouo highlighted the potential for collaboration with French institutions to share expertise and best practices, with a strong focus on digitalization to modernize the museum’s design and operations.

Leadership transition at the heart of discussions

The upcoming APF session will also feature a pivotal moment—the election of a new Secretary-General for the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). African candidates, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, are expected to compete for this influential position.
