Willy Mengue, a leading figure in the opposition to Maurice Kamto’s return as president of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), has called on Equinoxe TV to rebalance its information coverage.
He specifically requests a fairer treatment of news regarding his political party following the appearance of Vice-President Mamadou Mota on the programme “La vérité en face” on Sunday evening.
In an open letter to Equinoxe TV’s CEO, Mengue argues that this is necessary for “equity in news coverage”, “the pursuit of journalistic truth”, and “the right to information”.
“Urgently, in the absence of a direct debate between the two factions, a substantial right of reply must be organised for the programme called ‘truth to face’ that focused on the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto to the head of the MRC. You willingly gave the microphone to my political friend Mamadou Mota on this crucial issue; the quest for truth demands that you provide the same service to the protesters, whom I represent,” wrote Willy Mengue.
On Sunday evening, Mamadou Mota defended Kamto’s return to the MRC presidency—a return that Mengue firmly opposes, describing it as a “fraudulent comeback”.
“Equinoxe TV is known as ‘the people’s channel that reports beyond the image’. Your reporting on the manipulation of the MRC’s fundamental texts to facilitate the fraudulent return of a former chairman will be fair and equitable only if this rightful right of reply is granted. The Cameroonian people are watching you on this matter.”
