Democratic Republic of Congo: why new US sanctions?

Washington has once again taken decisive action, imposing fresh sanctions three months after targeting the Rwandan army and several of its senior officials. The United States is now specifically focusing on two individuals: an intelligence leader within the AFC/M23 and a commander from the FDLR. Both of these groups are deeply embroiled in the ongoing conflict destabilizing the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This raises critical questions: What specific actions led these two individuals to be singled out? Do these sanctions convey a direct message to Rwanda? And should we anticipate further prominent figures being targeted in the coming months?
