The University of Datcha in Togo is set to begin a new chapter with the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president. The decision, formalized during a recent cabinet meeting, marks a strategic move to establish the third public university in the country, with a focus on excellence in the Plateaux region.
Leading with academic expertise and vision
Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian and full professor specializing in political history and international relations, previously served as the Director of Academic Affairs and Enrollment at the University of Lomé. His deep understanding of academic administration and leadership will be pivotal in shaping the foundation of this new institution.
To support this ambitious project, he will be joined by Professor Kperkouma Walla, a renowned botanist and plant ecologist, who has been named the first vice-president. Together, this pair of accomplished academics will oversee the development of the university’s administrative, scientific, and pedagogical frameworks.
Addressing educational challenges and economic growth
Established by a cabinet decision in September 2023, the University of Datcha was created to tackle two critical issues in Togo’s higher education sector:
- Relieving overcrowded campuses: Easing the demographic pressure on existing public universities in Lomé and Kara.
- Boosting local development: Aligning academic programs with the economic, social, and cultural needs of the Plateaux region.
The university is designed to be forward-thinking, offering programs in technology, applied sciences, and vocational training. These fields are chosen to ensure graduates are well-prepared for the evolving job market, fostering both personal and regional growth.
