Togo and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) are deepening their collaboration in the realm of higher education. Gado Tchangbedji, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, hosted an IsDB delegation in Lomé on Tuesday, July 14, for a critical working session. The discussions centered on the Project to Support the Implementation of Higher Education Reform in Sciences and Engineering (Paresi).
The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the current progress of this pivotal initiative, which aims to elevate the standard of university education and strengthen research capabilities within scientific and technical disciplines. Both parties thoroughly examined the achievements made thus far, acknowledged challenges encountered, and outlined necessary steps to expedite the remaining planned activities.
During the session, the Minister commended the advancements already realized, while simultaneously urging for greater efficiency in processing administrative and technical procedures. This emphasis is crucial to ensure that all programmed infrastructure developments are completed within their stipulated timelines.
Key components of the Paresi project include the construction of advanced multi-purpose research laboratories at the Universities of Lomé and Kara, alongside the establishment of a dedicated pedagogical laboratory at the École normale supérieure d’Atakpamé. These vital facilities are expected to significantly enhance learning, research, and innovation environments across Togo’s public higher education institutions.
Jointly funded by the Togolese State and the Islamic Development Bank, Paresi aligns with the government’s strategic vision to modernize Togolese universities and equip them to meet the demands of economic development. The project specifically seeks to upgrade educational equipment, improve campus infrastructure, and cultivate expertise in critical science and engineering fields.
Beyond tangible investments, the program also places considerable importance on fostering academic excellence. As part of this commitment, scholarships were awarded last year to Master’s and Doctoral students enrolled at the Universities of Lomé and Kara.
Through this robust partnership, Togo is determined to bolster its human capital and ensure that its higher education sector plays an increasingly significant role in the structural transformation of the national economy.
