The Republic of Senegal has taken a giant leap in strengthening its healthcare system with the inauguration of the Polyclinique Internationale de Dakar (PID), a state-of-the-art medical facility strategically located between the Hôpital Principal de Dakar and the Corniche Ouest. Spanning 2,500 square meters, this level 4 polyclinic aims to curb medical evacuations abroad while positioning Dakar as a leading healthcare hub in West Africa.
Designed to deliver elite-level medical care, the PID boasts an initial capacity of 110 beds, with plans for future expansion. The facility consolidates multiple medical specialties under one roof, ensuring comprehensive patient care from diagnosis to treatment.
Cutting-edge medical infrastructure
A multidisciplinary approach to patient care
The hospital’s operational model revolves around integrated care units, merging civilian and military medical expertise to provide holistic treatment. Its emergency and critical care unit stands out with two dedicated intensive care wards totaling 12 beds, fully equipped with advanced ventilators and hemodialysis machines. A helipad nearby ensures rapid airlift capabilities for urgent medical cases.
The PID also features a dedicated oncology department, combining onco-hematology and radiotherapy, alongside rehabilitation services such as balneotherapy and physiotherapy. In addition, the facility is equipped to perform complex procedures, including renal and hepatic transplants, according to project leaders.
Digital transformation in healthcare
Embracing technological innovation, the Polyclinique Internationale de Dakar operates in a paperless environment. An electronic patient record system tracks individual medical journeys from admission to surgery, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. The hospital also offers a 24/7 call center, an online appointment scheduling platform, and a dedicated in-person reception to streamline patient access.
Strategic vision: reducing medical evacuations abroad
Advancing healthcare sovereignty
Senegal’s leadership envisions the PID as a cornerstone of its healthcare sovereignty. By providing advanced specialized care locally, the facility aims to reduce the need for patients to travel overseas, cutting costs and easing logistical burdens such as visa requirements and family separation.
The project stems from a collaboration between Senegal and Türkiye, facilitated through the Sila Group. It also seeks to attract international patients from across West Africa, positioning Dakar as a premier medical destination.
Phased rollout and future prospects
Smooth transition to full operational status
While the Polyclinique Internationale de Dakar is now officially open, it is currently running in a trial phase to finalize safety protocols and patient care pathways. Official patient admissions are set to begin next week.
With its dedicated check-up center and specialized care offerings, the PID is poised to elevate high-level medical standards in Senegal—and beyond, across West Africa. However, its long-term success hinges on affordability, service quality, and seamless integration with the national healthcare network.
