A fresh legal battle has emerged following Ousmane Sonko‘s controversial statements about Touba, sparking a formal complaint that demands judicial scrutiny. A prominent member of the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba has filed a petition with the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Dakar High Court, urging an immediate investigation into the remarks.
The complaint, submitted on July 14, 2026, is spearheaded by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang, a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and grandson of the city’s founder. He argues that Sonko‘s alleged declaration—linking illicit funds to Touba—dishonors the spiritual significance of the holy city and its people, built on the principles of integrity, faith, and justice bequeathed by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
In his letter, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang highlights a public statement where Ousmane Sonko is accused of asserting that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba.” The petitioner contends this accusation undermines Touba’s moral standing and calls for legal accountability. The complaint seeks to compel Sonko to clarify his remarks under oath and provide tangible evidence supporting them.
The legal filing also requests a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of the claims. Should the inquiry uncover wrongdoing, the complainant demands that appropriate legal action be taken, including potential charges of defamation, dissemination of false information, or other violations under Senegalese law. The petitioner claims to possess compelling evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the statements in question, and media publications.
This development adds to the escalating political tensions surrounding Sonko, whose remarks have ignited nationwide debate. If the Public Prosecutor’s Office proceeds with the case, it could lead to further judicial confrontations over the statements and their implications.
