SOLIBRA has officially unveiled the ECO BOX project, a significant initiative designed to intensify efforts against plastic pollution and champion a sustainable circular economy within the commune of Treichville. This launch coincided with World Plastic Bag-Free Day, observed on July 3, 2026.
Treichville was specifically chosen for this endeavor due to the substantial volumes of plastic waste it generates daily, which frequently obstruct drainage systems and compromise vital sanitation infrastructure. In response to this pressing challenge, ECO BOX aims to transform these discarded materials into valuable resources through a meticulously structured collection and recycling framework.
This pioneering project operates on a collaborative foundation, bringing together SOLIBRA, the Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy seeks to enhance overall waste management, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate new economic prospects at the local level.
To facilitate the immediate commencement of activities, essential equipment has been furnished to the operational teams. This includes six robust wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, 80 large trash bags, twelve rakes, along with protective gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.
Through the ECO BOX initiative, the partnering organizations are committed to achieving several key objectives. These encompass the progressive elimination of plastic debris from canals to mitigate flood risks, the creation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.
A critical component of the project also involves extensive community outreach and awareness. The dedicated collection agents will play a vital role in educating residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting practices, and fostering a pervasive culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.
The inaugural ceremony was marked by a symbolic ribbon-cutting, officially signaling the start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handover of keys for the first collection tricycle to an agent, who will now meticulously traverse the streets of Treichville to gather plastic waste.
