Senegal’s government will not cover travel expenses for football fans heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country’s Minister of Sports, Khady Diène Gaye, confirmed today. The decision puts an end to months of speculation about an official delegation of supporters accompanying the Lions of Teranga during the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking on national radio, Minister Gaye outlined the challenges behind the decision. ‘Each nation holds sovereignty over its support initiatives. For this World Cup, we cannot assume responsibility for fan travel,’ she stated. ‘The applications submitted by three supporter committee leaders were ultimately denied, reinforcing our stance.’

No official travel arrangements for fans

‘We will not organize or fund the journey of Senegalese supporters from Dakar to the tournament venues,’ the minister reiterated. The announcement follows failed visa procedures for key fan representatives, leaving them ineligible for government-assisted travel.

With no state-backed mobilization in place, the burden now falls entirely on individual fans—particularly the diaspora—or those with independent means to travel and cheer on the national team. The 2026 World Cup marks the first time the competition expands to 48 teams, co-hosted across three countries, adding logistical hurdles for supporters.

The Lions of Teranga, ranked among Africa’s top football nations, will rely heavily on passionate fans to create a vibrant presence in North America. While no official delegation will be funded, the government has not discouraged private initiatives among supporter groups to organize their own trips.
