Senegal’s Foreign Minister highlights evolving bilateral ties at French national event
The deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic connections between Dakar and Paris were underscored by Foreign Minister Me Moussa Sarr during a recent address marking the French National Day. Describing the partnership as « historical, dense, and multidimensional », he emphasized that both nations are entering a new phase of collaboration, driven by a « demanding, lucid, and constructive » dialogue to align their cooperation with the evolving priorities of their populations and regional dynamics.
The minister outlined key principles guiding this renewed partnership, including mutual respect for sovereignty, reciprocal trust, open dialogue, equal partnership, and shared interests. These values, he noted, form the foundation for advancing cooperation in sectors deemed critical to both countries.
Priorities in bilateral cooperation
Several strategic areas were highlighted as focal points for future collaboration:
- Education and vocational training: Celebrating ongoing initiatives, particularly in higher education and professional development, which foster knowledge exchange and skill-building.
- Healthcare and infrastructure: Strengthening projects in sanitation, healthcare systems, and critical infrastructure to support sustainable development.
- Transport and agriculture: Expanding partnerships to modernize transport networks and enhance food security through agricultural innovation.
- Energy and territorial development: Promoting renewable energy projects and decentralized cooperation to empower local communities.
- Research and innovation: Encouraging joint scientific and technological advancements to address shared challenges.
The minister also acknowledged France’s role as the top destination for Senegalese students abroad, extending gratitude to the French government for its support in organizing the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, particularly in logistics, security, and emergency response.
Addressing sensitive historical matters
Turning to the sensitive issue of historical memory, Me Moussa Sarr reported that « positive dialogues » have begun on facilitating access to archives and declassifying documents. Additionally, joint training programs for archivists and cultural heritage professionals are being developed, with French experts contributing to archaeological research at undisclosed historical sites.
Global challenges and shared commitments
The Foreign Minister identified critical international issues—security, climate change, energy transition, food sovereignty, global economic governance, mobility, peace, and stability—as areas requiring a « revitalized multilateralism » and balanced partnerships. He praised the high-level exchanges between the two nations and announced upcoming bilateral meetings, including intergovernmental seminars, to chart the path forward for future cooperation.
