In a heated exchange at the National Assembly, former legislator Maïmouna Sène, a prominent figure in the Alliance Pour la République (APR), took aim at Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, condemning what she described as a pattern of judicial populism distracting from critical economic challenges facing Senegal.

The APR executive secretary argued that while accountability is a legitimate institutional obligation, it should not be weaponized as a political communication tool to divert attention from the government’s shortcomings in driving economic recovery. Sène emphasized that the nation’s priorities—job creation, inflation control, and economic revival—are being overshadowed by what she termed a “witch hunt” mentality.

Maïmouna Sène cautioned the Prime Minister against using legal proceedings as a smokescreen for policy failures, urging a shift from rhetorical threats to tangible actions. She stressed that Senegalese voters entrusted the government not to dwell on past grievances but to address pressing concerns like rising living costs and unemployment.

In her remarks, she challenged Ousmane Sonko to first address accountability within his own ranks before targeting political opponents. Her statement underscored a growing frustration within the ruling party over the government’s focus on legal maneuvers rather than delivering on its promises of progress.
