In a renewed push for fiscal accountability, Mali’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has reignited discussions on the urgent need to strengthen oversight of political funds. Speaking to lawmakers during a parliamentary session, Sonko emphasized the importance of transparent financial management, framing the issue as a long-standing commitment of his party, Pastef.

Addressing concerns raised by deputies, Sonko clarified that the goal is not to eliminate political funds altogether but to establish robust control systems ensuring every public expenditure is justified and traceable. « Public funds must never be disbursed without strict scrutiny, » he declared, underscoring the principle of fiscal responsibility.

The Prime Minister revealed that his office currently manages political funds totaling approximately 1.77 billion West African CFA francs, a disclosure intended to demonstrate his alignment with the transparency agenda. He was quick to note, however, that this stance is not aimed at any individual but reflects a broader institutional priority.

Sonko’s advocacy for stricter controls contrasts with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s recent defense of maintaining these funds, citing critical expenditures such as national security, intelligence operations, and diplomatic commitments. The Prime Minister countered by pointing to international models, particularly in Western nations like France, where specialized commissions oversee the allocation of such funds.

Highlighting the political stakes, Sonko disclosed that he had engaged in discussions with the Head of State following a parliamentary initiative led by Deputy Guy Marius Sagna. The Premier cautioned that submitting the matter to a parliamentary vote could undermine the government’s political standing, signaling the sensitivity of the debate.
