Tensions between Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef-Les Patriotes party, and Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified following the abrupt removal of Sonko from the Prime Minister’s post. Just days after the new government was formed, negotiations to include key members of the opposition party in the executive branch collapsed, leaving a significant gap in the political landscape.

The announcement came via a June 1st communiqué from Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX), reiterated by Sonko on his official social media channels. The party declared that none of its officials would join the incoming administration, despite initial discussions aimed at fostering collaboration.

According to the statement, Pastef engaged in « responsible dialogue » with the presidency to negotiate terms of participation. However, a critical meeting between Sonko and Faye on the morning of June 1st revealed deep-seated disagreements over the role of the ruling majority in shaping executive power. While some areas of alignment were found, fundamental differences persisted, ultimately derailing the talks.

Governance disputes stall political cooperation

Following the inconclusive meeting, the COMEX reconvened to assess the situation and proposed revised terms to the president. These adjustments, however, were not accepted, pushing Pastef to withdraw entirely from the government formation process. The party’s communiqué left no room for ambiguity: « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not be part of the next government, nor will it be represented by any minister » within the executive.

This decision could reshape Senegal’s political dynamics, particularly as citizens grapple with pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the rupture, Pastef extended « heartfelt wishes for success » to the new administration, signaling the party’s intent to focus its influence within the National Assembly, where Sonko now holds the presidency. The coming days will be pivotal in determining how this stand-off influences the country’s governance.
