Although Lucas Chevalier was initially tipped to take over from Gianluigi Donnarumma as PSG’s main goalkeeper, he lost his starting spot to Matvey Safonov mid-season. Nonetheless, the Parisian club has reportedly chosen not to part ways with the French shot-stopper.

Last summer, PSG stayed relatively quiet on the transfer market but still executed a major shake-up. Gianluigi Donnarumma left the club after a strong second half of the season, replaced by Lucas Chevalier, who arrived from Lille for around €40 million, excluding bonuses. The French goalkeeper was expected to anchor the Parisians’ goal for years to come. However, following a shaky start, he soon lost his place to Matvey Safonov.
PSG chooses to keep Lucas Chevalier
The Russian international hasn’t relinquished the starting goalkeeper role since displacing Lucas Chevalier, leading the club to a second consecutive Champions League title. This situation might suggest uncertainty for the former Lille standout at PSG. However, the capital club has decided to keep him this summer. A transfer for Lucas Chevalier is not on the cards; his attitude and signals sent during the second half of the season have apparently convinced the PSG coaching staff.
A young goalkeeper arrives
Simultaneously, PSG is planning for the future in goal. Alessandro Longoni, an 18-year-old Italian goalkeeper, is set to join the Parisian side on a free transfer from AC Milan. He will compensate for Renato Marin’s departure on a season-long loan to CD Nacional, which competes in Portugal’s top division. In other words, while Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier will continue to battle for the starting spot next season, Alessandro Longoni and Renato Marin could eventually take over.
