In a landmark session held at the Governor’s Palace in Porto-Novo, former President Patrice Talon officially assumed the role of President of Benin’s newly established Senate. The event marked a significant milestone in the country’s democratic evolution, as senators from across the nation gathered to formalize their leadership under the chamber’s first-ever governing body.

In his maiden address, Patrice Talon emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective responsibility within the Senate. Addressing his colleagues, he described the institution as a “united family” bound by consensus and shared purpose. His words reflected a tone of reconciliation, highlighting the harmonious atmosphere that had prevailed during the election of the Senate bureau, where political differences were set aside in favor of cooperation.

Supporting the leadership team
The Senate’s governing body was completed with the election of Louis Vlavonou as Vice President and Alassane Seidou as Rapporteur. Their appointments, alongside Talon’s leadership, signal a new chapter for Benin’s legislative process, one characterized by unity and purpose.
This historic transition follows the Senate’s official inauguration on July 30 and the Constitutional Court’s validation of its internal regulations on August 3, setting the stage for a productive five-year term.
