Patrice Talon elected first president of Benin’s Senate
Just four months after concluding his presidential mandate, Patrice Talon has taken on a new leadership role as president of Benin’s inaugural Senate. This historic institution was established through the 2025 constitutional reform to enhance the nation’s political framework.
The former Beninese president Patrice Talon was elected this Thursday, August 6, as president of Benin’s first-ever Senate. The ex-head of state, who led the country from 2016 to 2026, secured 24 votes out of 25, with only one blank ballot recorded. The new upper house, created following the November 2025 constitutional revision, began operations at the end of July. It comprises 25 members, including former presidents of the Republic and personalities appointed by the head of state.
A new chapter in Benin’s political landscape
During his inauguration speech in Porto-Novo, Patrice Talon pledged to work toward “strengthening national unity, political stability, peace, and democracy.” He also committed to making the Senate “a unified family” dedicated to the smooth functioning of institutions. Among the members of this new assembly are former presidents Thomas Boni Yayi and Nicéphore Soglo, as well as Paul Hounkpè, a former opposition presidential candidate. The Senate represents one of the key institutional innovations introduced by the constitutional reform, designed to better regulate the country’s political life.
Patrice Talon thus returns to a prominent role just months after handing over power to his former Economy Minister, Romuald Wadagni, who was elected president in April of this year.
