This pivotal encounter offers the capital club a prime opportunity to claim its fifth consecutive French championship.
Paris Saint-Germain is aiming for a potential double this season. Having already secured a spot in the Champions League final for the second consecutive year, the Parc des Princes residents now have the chance to clinch their first domestic trophy on Wednesday, May 13th. Currently dominating the league standings with 73 points, the Parisians will travel to face Lens (67 points), who have enjoyed an exceptional season and firmly hold second place, in this crucial matchday 29 fixture scheduled for 9 PM local time.
3 – Paris SG could be the third team in the 21st century to mathematically secure the Ligue 1 title in a match against their future runner-up, following Lyon v Lens in 2001/02 (3-1) and PSG themselves v Monaco in 2017/18 (7-1). Anticipation.— OptaJean (@OptaJean) May 11, 2026
The capital club, pursuing its 14th overall Ligue 1 title – and an impressive fifth in a row – stands on the brink of making further history. They could become only the third team this century to mathematically seal the championship by defeating their direct runner-up, a feat previously achieved by Lyon in the 2001-2002 season and by PSG itself against Monaco in 2017-2018.
PSG set to secure official championship with a draw or victory
To lift the coveted trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s squad simply needs to avoid defeat. A draw at Lens’s Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern club has suffered only two losses this season, would be enough to secure the PSG Ligue 1 title. With 74 points, they would be mathematically out of reach for Lens (who would then have 68 points) before the final matchday on Sunday, May 17th. Similarly, a Parisian victory would also definitively seal the championship, establishing an even wider points margin.
Favorable goal difference: a significant advantage for PSG
Conversely, to maintain even a slim hope, Lens must secure a home victory against a PSG side currently grappling with several injuries (including Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lee Kang-In, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Chevalier). Should Lens triumph, Pierre Sage’s team, whose coach was recently named Ligue 1 Coach of the Year, would narrow the gap to three points (70 versus 73). This scenario would theoretically allow them to draw level on points on the 38th and final matchday, provided the stars align (and crucially, if PSG loses their derby against Paris FC).
However, even this highly improbable scenario is unlikely to prevent Marquinhos and his teammates from claiming another title, given their substantial goal difference advantage (+44 compared to Lens’s +29). This critical factor serves as the tie-breaker in the event of equal points. In essence, even a defeat would likely not cost Paris Saint-Germain the top spot, unless Lens manages to overcome the significant 15-goal difference separating the two teams.
PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, acknowledged the situation following their 1-0 win against Brest. “We must highlight what Lens has achieved all season; they have performed at an incredible level, making it very difficult for us,” he stated, adding, “but we are already champions, 99.9%.” The question remains whether that certainty will reach 100% this Wednesday or if the wait will extend to the final weekend of competition.
