To mark International Museum Day, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Handicrafts orchestrated a groundbreaking event in Chad: the first-ever Nuit des Musées at the National Museum of Chad in N’Djamena. The late-evening affair transformed the museum into a vibrant cultural hub, drawing crowds eager to explore the nation’s rich heritage after dark.
The opening was nothing short of spectacular. As the clock struck 20:00, the National Ballet of Chad kicked off the festivities with dazzling traditional performances at the museum entrance. The dancers, adorned in vivid costumes, swept visitors into an immediate immersion in Chad’s rhythmic traditions.
Anne Marie-Thérèse, a first-time attendee, couldn’t hide her excitement. « The energy is contagious! Just stepping into the National Museum is thrilling, but witnessing these traditional dances live makes the experience unforgettable. It’s a brilliant way to connect with our roots, » she shared, her eyes sparkling with wonder.
The night unfolded across multiple exhibition zones, each offering a unique window into Chad’s past and present. Visitors wandered freely through permanent collections, engaging with interactive experiences designed to spark curiosity. Highlights included guided tours spotlighting ancient artifacts, spellbinding storytelling sessions led by griots and museum guides, documentary screenings showcasing both tangible and intangible heritage, and live artistic performances that lingered long into the night.
Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, Director of the National Ballet of Chad, emphasized the transformative potential of such an event. « Our traditional dances are more than entertainment; they’re living archives of our ancestors’ wisdom. We’ve adorned the stage with everyday objects from their time to bridge generations. Ideally, this Nuit des Musées should become a quarterly tradition—an unmissable opportunity to celebrate and safeguard our cultural identity, » he remarked.
Adding an international dimension to the celebration, the French Ambassador to Chad and his delegation graced the event, underscoring the global significance of preserving and promoting Chad’s cultural treasures.
