The Ligue 1 matchday 34 encounter between Nantes and Toulouse was abruptly halted just 20 minutes into play. Supporters from the Tribune Loire section initiated the disruption by throwing flares onto the pitch, leading to a number of individuals invading the field.

A truly nightmarish scene unfolded on Sunday evening in Nantes, a club already facing the grim reality of relegation to Ligue 2 for the upcoming season. The final Ligue 1 match of the 34th day against Toulouse was brought to a halt just 22 minutes into play. Following the display of several banners, some expressing discontent and others overtly offensive, fans situated in the Tribune Loire section began to hurl flares onto the pitch at the Stade de la Beaujoire. The approximately one hundred riot police deployed for the event were unfortunately positioned on the wrong side when the disturbances began.

Referee Stéphanie Frappart promptly directed both teams to seek refuge in their changing rooms. Notably, only Vahid Halilhodzic, who at 74 years old was managing the final match of his illustrious coaching career, remained on the field to confront the perturbators, some of whom had invaded the playing area. Visibly agitated and deeply saddened by the turn of events, he was ultimately restrained by stadium security personnel. Earlier in the match, he had been the sole figure to receive support from members of the Brigade Loire, the prominent Nantes ultras group. Tearfully, he had acknowledged the Tribune Loire just about fifteen minutes before the clashes erupted.

Nantes players were even observed urging their families to evacuate the stadium. After approximately ten minutes of escalating confrontations, security forces attempted to enter the Tribune Loire, only to be violently repelled by masked leaders. During these intense exchanges, seats were ripped out and hurled at the riot police, while the rest of the stadium watched the unfolding scenes in stunned disbelief.

“Coach Vahid” returned to the touchline after a further ten minutes, offering to engage directly with the supporters. “It’s too dangerous, they’re fighting each other,” he was warned. “But what are they going to do?” the Nantes coach retorted, clearly frustrated.

A crisis unit was immediately convened, involving representatives from the LFP and public authorities. The match’s fate now hangs in the balance. Reports from the broadcaster suggest the prevailing sentiment leans towards a definitive abandonment of the game. As of 9:45 PM, the match had not resumed.
