Morocco secures key role in Mediterranean parliamentary assembly
Morocco has been elected to the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and granted leadership of the Artificial Intelligence Commission, marking a significant diplomatic achievement.
A Moroccan parliamentary delegation actively participated in the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital.
Led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives, the delegation worked to enhance Morocco’s standing within PA-UfM’s governing bodies.
Strategic appointment to artificial intelligence commission
During the Bureau and expanded Bureau meetings, the plenary session approved the new PA-UfM Bureau composition for 2026-2030 along with permanent commission presidencies. Morocco was elected as a Bureau member and entrusted with chairing the Artificial Intelligence Commission—a clear recognition of the country’s parliamentary diplomacy capabilities and growing influence within this Euro-Mediterranean institution.
Key priorities discussed
Fassi Fihri emphasized the assembly’s vital role in strengthening dialogue and cooperation between Mediterranean parliaments. He highlighted how the selected themes—artificial intelligence, youth engagement, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect the collective awareness of a profound transitional period. These themes extend beyond technological changes to encompass cultural shifts, evolving power dynamics, and new decision-making mechanisms.
The Vice President noted that under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues advancing its modernization agenda, digital transformation, and technological infrastructure development. This strategic approach positions knowledge-based economy as a cornerstone for sustainable development, enhanced competitiveness, and Morocco’s role as a reliable partner across the Mediterranean, Africa, and globally.
Delegation’s contributions
The Moroccan delegation, including Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, actively engaged in various bodies and commissions. Their interventions addressed critical Mediterranean priorities including parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence governance, youth participation in decision-making, and strengthening security, stability, and shared development.
Call for strengthened cooperation
The session concluded with a united call to maintain parliamentary coordination among member states and reinforce PA-UfM’s role as a dialogue and confidence-building platform. This is essential for advancing security, stability, sustainable development, and shared prosperity across Mediterranean communities.
