The 7th ministerial meeting of the African Atlantic States Process (AASP) kicked off in Cotonou, Benin, with the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin jointly presiding over the proceedings. This high-level gathering underscores a renewed commitment to deepening cooperation among African nations bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

The initiative aligns with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, to foster a shared vision of peace, stability, and inclusive prosperity across the African Atlantic space. The meeting serves as a platform to strengthen regional integration and advance collective efforts toward sustainable development.

Delegations and key figures in attendance

The Moroccan delegation, led by Mohamed Methqal, Ambassador and Director-General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), includes key officials such as Tarik Iziraren, Permanent Secretary of the AASP, and Rachid Rguibi, Morocco’s Ambassador to Benin. The team also comprises senior representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, reflecting the depth of the country’s engagement in regional affairs.

Progress and milestones of the AASP

Since its inception in Rabat in June 2022, the AASP has achieved significant milestones. These include the establishment of a permanent secretariat in Rabat, the formation of specialized working groups, and the adoption of a comprehensive action plan. The plan prioritizes political dialogue, maritime security, blue economy, connectivity, energy transition, and marine environmental protection as core areas of focus.

Advancing regional maritime cooperation

Following successful meetings in Rabat, New York, and Praia, the Cotonou gathering marks another pivotal step in strengthening coordination among member states. The discussions aim to enhance sustainable development, improve maritime governance, and promote co-development across the African Atlantic coastline.

The outcomes of this ministerial meeting are expected to further solidify partnerships and drive collective action toward shared objectives in the region.
