The Union of Journalists of the Free African Press (UJPLA) has voiced strong condemnation over the Malian government’s decision to ban the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine across the country.

According to the UJPLA, this move represents a serious violation of press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access independent, pluralistic, and unbiased information.

Jeune Afrique, a long-standing pan-African publication, has played a key role in shaping democratic discourse, political analysis, and socioeconomic debates across the continent. The UJPLA warns that this prohibition sets a dangerous precedent, signaling an authoritarian drift that contradicts Mali’s international human rights commitments.

The organization emphasizes that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities but an inalienable right, enshrined in global conventions such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

UJPLA’s Demands and Calls to Action

In response, the UJPLA has taken a firm stance:

  • Firmly condemns the arbitrary ban, calling it an unjustified restriction on democratic freedoms;
  • Urges immediate revocation of the sales prohibition on Jeune Afrique in Mali;
  • Calls for constructive dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental freedoms by Malian authorities;
  • Appeals to human rights and press freedom organizations to unite against this regressive policy.

The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering support for press freedom and the safety of journalists throughout Africa.
