Le Mans secures promotion to Ligue 1 as Bastia faces relegation to Ligue 3

The French Football League’s disciplinary committee confirmed Wednesday evening the 2-0 victory of Le Mans over Bastia in Corsica. The result secures Le Mans’ promotion to Ligue 1, while Bastia is relegated to Ligue 3—the professional division set to replace the National next season.

Following crowd disturbances in the final moments of the match, Bastia was handed two immediate stadium closures and one suspended closure. The club narrowly avoided a point deduction, a penalty that had loomed over them after recent fan-related incidents.

The disciplinary meeting came after the match in Bastia was halted with just seconds remaining. Referee Ruddy Buquet had already sent players to the locker rooms to protect them from flares and smoke bombs thrown from the stands. The score stood as 2-0 in favor of Le Mans, a result the disciplinary committee decided to uphold without further deliberation.

Bastia avoids point deduction despite persistent fan issues

Bastia’s disciplinary record had raised concerns, particularly after a previous incident on December 5, when a flare landed on the pitch during the match against Red Star. That match was abandoned, and Bastia was penalized with a suspended point deduction. However, the committee determined that no player was directly affected during the Le Mans match, allowing the club to avoid further sanctions.

«Typically, a point is deducted when a match participant is struck by an object, explained Sébastien Deneux, president of the LFP’s disciplinary committee. In this case, no one was hit, so the suspended sanction did not apply.»

The decision leaves Bastia in Ligue 3, a division soon to become the third tier of French professional football. Meanwhile, Le Mans celebrates its historic promotion to Ligue 1, marking a significant milestone for the club and its supporters.
