The President of the Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, convened an emergency session of the National Security Council (NSC) at the Presidential Palace to assess the country’s security landscape. During the meeting, officials highlighted the remarkable progress achieved in combating illegal gold mining, spearheaded by the Special Task Force Against Illegal Mining (STFAIM), established in 2021.
Unprecedented enforcement yields significant results
Between 2021 and the first half of 2026, the STFAIM dismantled over 8,500 illegal mining sites across the country. Operations also led to the apprehension of 4,474 individuals, 65% of whom were foreign nationals, alongside the seizure of more than 960 million West African francs and approximately 136 kilograms of gold. Dozens of mining equipment and vehicles used in illicit activities were confiscated and destroyed.
Challenges persist despite progress
While acknowledging these accomplishments, the NSC emphasized that illegal gold mining remains a persistent and expanding issue in several regions. The Council underscored the severe threats posed by this activity, including environmental degradation, national security risks, depletion of natural resources, and economic instability.
Stricter measures and inter-agency collaboration
In response, President Ouattara directed Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé to escalate enforcement efforts. Key strategies include strengthening accountability among administrative, traditional, and customary authorities, as well as defense and security forces through local security committees and civil-military units under prefectural oversight.
The government also plans to deepen cooperation with diplomatic missions from the countries of origin of foreign miners. This collaboration aims to enhance awareness campaigns and streamline the repatriation of individuals involved in illegal mining operations.
Tougher penalties and operational upgrades
The NSC called for rigorous enforcement of existing laws against all individuals and entities participating in illegal mining. The Prime Minister was tasked with presenting a comprehensive proposal to the Council of Ministers to reinforce the national framework against this practice.
Additionally, the Council approved plans to boost the operational capabilities of the STFAIM and related security units working in tandem with the task force. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to curbing illegal gold mining, safeguarding natural resources, protecting the environment, and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
