Abidjan — President Alassane Ouattara chaired a high-level meeting of the National Security Council yesterday, focusing on the nation’s security landscape. A key highlight of the session was the commendable progress made in dismantling illegal gold mining operations across Côte d’Ivoire by the Special Task Force Against Illegal Gold Mining (GS-LOI), established in 2021.
Tougher measures yield significant results
Since its inception, the GS-LOI has dismantled more than 8,500 illegal mining sites nationwide. Their relentless efforts have also led to the arrest of 4,474 individuals, with foreign nationals accounting for 65% of those apprehended. Authorities seized over 960 million FCFA in illicit funds and approximately 136 kilograms of gold. In addition, numerous tools and machinery used in illegal operations were confiscated and destroyed.
Despite these achievements, the National Security Council acknowledged the ongoing challenge of illegal gold mining, which continues to spread in several regions. The persistent issue remains a grave concern due to its devastating effects on the environment, national security, natural resources, and the country’s economic stability.
Strategic directives to strengthen enforcement
In response, President Ouattara directed Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé to implement stricter measures to combat this menace. The Council outlined key strategies, including reinforcing the accountability of local authorities, traditional leaders, and security forces through existing security committees and civil-military units under prefectural oversight.
Furthermore, the government plans to deepen collaboration with diplomatic missions from the countries of origin of foreign illegal miners. This partnership aims to enhance awareness campaigns and streamline the repatriation of apprehended individuals.
The Council emphasized the strict application of existing laws against all individuals or entities involved in illegal gold mining activities. As part of this effort, the Prime Minister has been tasked with submitting a proposal to the Council of Ministers to reinforce the national framework against illegal mining.
To bolster operational capabilities, the government will also increase the resources and manpower of the GS-LOI and supporting security units working alongside it.

The National Security Council underscored that these enhanced measures reflect Côte d’Ivoire’s unwavering resolve to curb illegal gold mining. The goal is to safeguard natural resources, protect the environment, and ensure national security and economic growth for future generations.
