A major operation in N’Djamena has successfully broken up an illegal slaughter ring operating in the shadows of the upcoming Tabaski festivities. During a targeted raid in the Machaga district, located within the 8th arrondissement, a joint mission comprising the Ministry of Livestock, the health police coordination, and security forces discovered a massive group of sick animals, including more than 100 oxen and 40 sheep.
Public health threat uncovered in Machaga
These animals were acquired by an unidentified international NGO working alongside local collaborators. The livestock was intended to be distributed as meat donations for the population during the holiday, posing a severe public health risk due to their diseased state. This illicit activity was being carried out within a private concession, hidden from official oversight until the intervention.
Following the discovery, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production, Dr. Ousmane Yosko Souhoumi, conducted an on-site inspection on May 28, 2026. He expressed deep concern over the situation and immediately ordered strict remedial actions to protect the community.

Emergency measures and veterinary intervention
The authorities have laid out a clear plan to manage the crisis. Carcasses of animals that have already perished will be incinerated to prevent any potential disease spread. Meanwhile, veterinary teams have been tasked with feeding and treating those animals that can still be saved. This incident has prompted a call for heightened surveillance across Tchad to ensure the safety of the food supply for all citizens during this sensitive period.
