Haut-Uele authority dismisses claims linking governor to rebel leader

The communication unit of the Haut-Uele provincial government has categorically refuted claims suggesting a connection between Governor Jean Bakomito Gambu and rebel leader Corneille Nangaa. In an official statement, Muammar Awoni, Head of the Cellule de Communication (Cellcom), addressed recent media reports that implied the governor’s alleged complicity with armed groups operating in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In response to an article titled “Insécurité à Isiro : Jean Bakomito ferait-il le lit à Corneille Nangaa ?”, the Cellcom issued a detailed rebuttal, denying key allegations and defending the governor’s record on security and peacebuilding in the province.
No paralysis of economic activities in Isiro, authorities assert
The statement emphasized that there was no paralysis of economic activities in Isiro on June 17, 2026, as reported. According to Cellcom, local business operators confirmed that operations continued normally that day. The claim of a shutdown, the statement argued, lacks factual basis and appears to be part of a smear campaign.
The Cellcom also challenged reports of school closures in Isiro on the same date. It pointed out that late June typically coincides with the end of the academic year in the DRC, making such claims misleading. Additionally, the statement denied the existence of any protest marches in Isiro on June 17, 2026.
